The first day of school can be overwhelming. For young children living with blindness or low vision, these anxieties can be heightened — especially if they lack the support they deserve. It’s a time when children learn and develop quickly and without the right resources some can fall behind.
That’s why, last year, we spent 30,789 hours helping children who are blind or have low vision. But we know that there is still so much we can do to make sure no child gets left behind this school year.
The NDIS plays a big role in our work, but each year we still need to find more than $2.5 million to make sure children who are blind or have low vision get the support they deserve. Vision Australia has been working with Gabe and his family for years. And if there’s one thing we know, it’s that Gabe is excited to start his latest school year.
Before he was born, Gabe suffered a brain injury leaving him with complex needs and low vision. Doctors told Gabe’s parents he would never walk or talk.
Through visits at home, online sessions and blocks of intensive physiotherapy, Gabe is now thriving — and like many kids this year, he’s excited to be reunited with his friends and teachers.
